My top priority is to empower North Carolinians to create jobs. To invigorate our stagnant economy with robust job creation, we must immediately, and responsibly, cut, cut, and cut some more.
Cut spending and debt
During the last decade of Democratic control, North Carolina state government went on a spending spree that sucked the life out of our economy. When they ran out of taxpayer money, they circumvented the state constitution and borrowed more. Enough is enough. In our first year of governing, I led the Republican legislature to cut $1 billion of wasteful spending and pay down our debt. We are just getting started.
Cut taxes
North Carolina is one of the highest-taxed states in our region. Let that reality sink in. It’s no wonder our unemployment rate is also one of the highest! Our sales tax is too high, so we cut it in 2011. We also cut taxes on small businesses. But I believe North Carolinians deserve more, and I will fight to cut taxes again and again, as long as I’m given the privilege to serve.
You can be sure of this: I will never raise taxes on North Carolinians, especially during a recession. We should force government to be as efficient as possible, in order to allow all taxpayers to keep as much as possible of their hard-earned money.
Cut government
Our state government is too big. Its monstrous bureaucracy has hamstrung job creators in a tangled web of red tape and senseless regulation. For years, state government has grown less efficient and less accountable – I will reverse that trend. To paraphrase our founding fathers, the best job-creation a government can do is govern least – let the private sector flourish and our economy will grow.
