Tillis Statement on Governor's Budget Proposal

Raleigh – House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg) released the following statement today regarding Gov. Perdue’s budget proposal:

“Gov. Perdue’s budget proposal is, disappointingly, more of the same failed approach that led to the fiscal mess the Republican legislative majority inherited. The Governor proposes to raise almost a billion dollars in taxes on every citizen and small business. Her 16% increase in the sales tax would negatively impact the North Carolinians who are most in need and would severely impact our ability to move beyond the recession we are struggling to emerge from. It is time we budget responsibly without demanding more from the pockets of our citizens. It appears that Gov. Perdue is making fiscal decisions based on political expediency rather than a desire to work together to solve North Carolina’s financial problems.”

Boston, MA
United States

Mitt Romney today announced the support of North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis.

“I'm pleased to earn the support of Thom,” said Mitt Romney. “Tar Heel state voters are looking for a president who will reverse this administration’s failed economic policies that have hurt small businesses and crushed the middle class. I look forward to Thom’s help in what will be a crucial state in November.”

“North Carolina families are concerned for their futures,” said Speaker Tillis. “We are borrowing money from China, growing government, and jobs are still hard to come by. Our country needs a president that will institute the kind of pro-growth policies that restore economic security for all Americans. Mitt Romney has a bold vision to restore America’s promise. He will keep taxes low, scale back the size of government, and repeal President Obama’s disastrous healthcare law. I am proud to stand with him and call on my fellow North Carolinians to do the same.”

Tillis announces candidacy for House Majority Leadership

Representative Thom Tillis formally announced his candidacy to run for the Speaker position in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Tillis said “We have been honored by the citizens of North Carolina with their confidence. As Speaker, I will do everything in my power to work with the members of the House to ensure that we meet their high expectations.”

Tillis, a former partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers and IBM Global Business Services said he wants to bring his organizational skills and his legislative experience together to lead the NC House. He believes he can build on the success of the campaign effort to facilitate the republican’s transition to the House majority. Tillis served as Campaign Chairman for the North Carolina House of Representatives in the recent election cycle, which culminated in a stunning victory on Tuesday. Republicans combined to make history by winning majorities in the House and Senate for th first time since 1898.

Tillis said “Our caucus members and candidates receive all the credit for their hard work and financial support. It was an amazing example of teamwork that I believe will continue as we transition to the governing majority.”

On November 3, 2010 the newspapers across North Carolina reported the clean sweep of the NC House and Senate. All of the candidates, volunteers, and voters who supported our efforts are collectively responsible for this momentous occasion, and we are all grateful for your support. We came together and we ended the 100-year stranglehold on the North Carolina General Assembly. We are already working together to elect our House and Senate leadership and to initiate a smooth transition of power. Thank you for your support and thank you in advance for your continued involvement.

Watch the video below to view an animation progression of unemployment rates from January 2007 through December 2009. Unfortunately the trend continues and now unemployment is at 9.7%. To put this into meaningful terms, the next time you ride through your neighborhood, count the houses and realize that one in every 10 likely is home to someone who is out of work.
