On Tuesday, May 2nd, 2 out of 3 Primary voters
put their support behind Thom Tillis to be the 98th District nominee
for the Republican Party. The voter turnout in the 98th District
race was more than twice the average county-wide turnout and the
highest turnout of any race in Mecklenburg County. Campaign
Manager, Jayson Polo said "We knew getting the vote out would be a key
factor in our campaign. We have to thank all of the volunteers
who got the voters to the polls. They are the reason we had such
an overwhelming margin of victory."
With no Democrat or Independent challenger
filed for the General Election, the Primary win paves the way for Thom
Tillis to serve as the 98th District Representative in the North
Carolina House of Representatives. Tillis says, "I am not
looking past the General Election as there is always the possibility
of a write-in challenge, but we are very optimistic."
The day after
the election, Tillis reached out to members of the local delegation in
Mecklenburg County to lay the groundwork for working relationships he
believes are essential. Tillis said he was pleased with the warm
reception he received, and he is looking forward to working with the
distinguished members of the Mecklenburg delegation. Tillis says
"After the General Assembly resesses the short session, I will
intensify my efforts to meet with key members of the Republican
caucus. I want to take full advantage of the fact that I have
nearly 6 months to do my homework and to be prepared to work for a
conservative legislative agenda." With endorsement and support
from the elected officials in Cornelius, Davidson, and Huntersville,
Tillis is already working to develop a local agenda based on the needs
of the 98th District. Later in the fall, Tillis plans to host a
series of "Legislative Agenda Workshops" inviting local elected
officials and individual citizens to provide feedback on issues
including education, transportation, taxes, and immigration.
