Governor and General Assembly Leadership MUST Step Up to the Challenge
With hundreds of bills passed as of the May 14th crossover deadline, most citizens expect significant progress on the State's economic situation. However, our greatest challenges lie ahead. The economic downturn clearly precipitated our budget crisis, but past excessive spending and the resulting expansion of State government has created a challenge far greater than it could have been. The Governor and the leadership of the General Assembly must step up to the challenge.
We must cut nonessential spending and we must do it now. We must cast a skeptical eye towards any stimulus money that comes with burdensome requirements to expand government. We need to say "thanks but no thanks" to any stimulus money with onerous strings attached. We must also dispense with the notion that new taxes are an option--we cannot tax our way out of this problem..
These times require all elected leaders to set aside partisan politics and to work together to confront the economic crisis. The Republican Caucus leadership has offered to work with the Democrat leadership to develop a bipartisan plan to make meaningful cuts and to implement sustainable spending strategies. Our leadership needs to move quickly to this end and citizens should demand it. |
