SMOKING BAN legislation passes House and now headed for the Senate
The NC House voted in favor of the passage of SMOKING BAN legislation (House Bill 2) last week. Four amendments were passed that addressed concerns regarding property rights and unintended consequences. Tillis spoke in support of an amendment offered by Nelson Cole, which provided an "Opt Out" provision for any business or public place that does not employ or admit minors. Tillis says "I voted for the bill after it was amended, but I still have concerns with the scope of the legislation. It needs more work to protect against inappropriate applications of the ban." Tillis was interviewed by WBT host Keith Larson regarding ban. CLICK this link to listen to the interview with Keith Larson.

Tillis appointed to Joint House and Senate Select Committee on Economic Recovery
Representative Tillis was appointed to a new Joint Select Committee that will develop policy related to the Federal "stimulus/recovery" funds. Tillis says "We need to thoroughly assess any opportunities to use stimulus funds, and we need to ensure the funds go to priorities that will produce long-term benefits for North Carolina's citizens. At the same time, we need to avoid funding that comes with requirements that are inconsistent with sound fiscal policy." While some funding seems to be offered without any "strings," other funding could create long-term obligations that may not justify the short-term infusion of money. Tillis says "We need to keep in mind that the stimulus money comes from those of us who pay taxes. We do not want to spend any more than is absolutely necessary to help improve our jobs/economic development situation."
Tillis plans to hold a briefing for local government and business leaders to provide the latest update on the economic recovery funds and to receive input as to local priorities. All meetings will be open to the public. Look for updates on this email distribution. |
